What is metabolism?

Metabolism is the chemical and physical processes continuously going on inside your body to create heat and energy, much like an internal burning furnace. Everyone’s metabolism processes or burns calories from foods and nutrients at a different rate. Optimizing your metabolic efficiency is a key to successful weight management.

Your metabolic rate is affected by some factors that you have no control over, such as your gender and age. However, there are factors that you can control, such as the amount of lean body mass (muscle), whether you exercise, how you minimize stress and what you consume, which can enhance your metabolism so that you can successfully manage your weight.
 

†In a study of 60 healthy college-aged men and women, 100 calories represents the average calories burned over three hours for those participants consuming a single serving of Celsius®.
